SCE-October 4, 2008 – Following the Wall of Shame rally which was organized by Nazanin Afshin-Jam during the UN visit of Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad , Stop Child Executions has released the most comprehensive list of recommendations ever published for ending the practice of juvenile executions in Iran.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n


\nAfter more than two years of demanding the Islamic Republic of Iran to stop it’s inhumane and illegal practice of juvenile executions, SCE has outlined a detailed list of recommendations.  Stop Child Executions has also asked the United Nations and international community to seriously address the issue of child executions in Iran and to formally hold the government of Iran responsible for it’s violations of international children and human rights conventions. SCE has requested the UN to immediately create a task force to address the child atrocities in Iran and to hold the government of Iran responsible and subject to disciplinary action by the international community. The list additionally makes specific requests from Iran’s supreme leaders Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s head of Judiciary Ayatollah Shahrudi, Iran’s parliament and president, European Union and other world governments, International human rights organizations and activists, Iranian lawyers and the parents of the accused and the victims.<\/p>\n

The recommendations are accompanied with the latest list<\/a> of names and information of 140 Iranian juveniles including 5 girls who known to be currently on death row.

\nIran is the only country in the world known to have executed children in 2008 – In some of the 6 cases, parents and attorneys of the accused were not even notified until after the execution, while Iran’s own laws require 48 hour prior notice. At least 10 Iranian children are known to have been executed in Iran last year. Iran is the state party to the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) and the International Covenant in Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), both of which prohibit death sentences for crimes by persons below eighteen years of age.

\nSCE has also asked the international public to sign their petition with nearly 19,000 signatures including world politicians and activists such as Iranian Nobel Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi which they plan to deliver to United Nations and the government of Iran along with the recommendations.

\nUnder Iran’s interpretation of Islamic Shari\u2019a law, girls as young as 9 and boys 15 are considered mature enough to be held responsible for crime subjected to the  death penalty, however when it comes to civil matters such as the the right to vote , obtaining a drivers license, issuing of a  passport and the right to own property the same juveniles are still legally treated as a children. <\/p>\n

Stop Child Executions recognizes the right and responsibility of governments to bring to justice those suspected of criminal offenses, but is opposed to the death penalty in all circumstances especially for those person guilty of crimes committed before the age of 18.
